Heyas my lovely rock-sniffing folk! I'm sure 99.99999% of you, like myself, need to brush up on your mapping skills for the upcoming semester of uni because lets be real, mapping is a skill that needs forever improvement :D What better way to do it than a gruelling excursion to the eastern most portion of the Melbourne zone where we see a surficial expression of the Mt. Wellington fault zone. Here rocks have been messed up quite badly with polydeformation occurring in many places. What a delectable treat to map out and get frustrated over. There will be a lot of erasing, a lot of head scratching and maybe a few tears if not from the rocks then definitely from the goodbyes. It's probably best if you've had a solid grounding in basic structural geo from 1st and 2nd year. I'm happy to teach you the rest when we get there :) What you can expect to get out of this trip: -An appreciation for Victoria's complex geology -A basic understanding of the eastern-most portion of the Western Lachlan Fold belt -Some practice in field mapping -Swimming in the lake after a hard day's work if it's not bitterly cold and frigid like my heart -An exposure to poly-deformation THIS IS A WEEKEND TRIP SO CAMPING WILL BE INVOLVED. What you need to do/bring: -Organise transport there -Download the field memo i've made and have a quick read if you're unfamiliar with the area/mapping (it has directions!) -Sunscreen, hats and other UV safety equipment. The sun is still unforgiving in March -Tent. Tent sharing is allowed but for the comfort of all around you, please keep grunting to a minimum. -Basic toiletries if you need creature comforts -Hand lens**/ruler**/compass***/field notebook**/other geo tools -An A3 board for mapping! You can bring an A4 clipboard but you'll have to just fold out the base map i give to you -Food to last you the weekend -Lots of water. I'll bring a fair amount in case people need more but make sure you have at least a 2L bottle to last you during the day. -A sense of humour. Preferably dark so I don't scare you all. ******I don't have enough compasses yet to share with other people so you will need to bring your own compasses with clinometers Hopefully i'll have the money to buy more for the next trip so sorry folks. No compass, no hat, no play, no fun today!******
